Reviews From Teachers and others who have used the DVD

I will post reviews from all who send me one after viewing the dvd.  It will help others to know how the kids react to viewing it.

Powerful, adaptable to use for academic motivation as well as healthy choices (lessons and small groups).
I used the video with 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students- all participated, engaged discussions about choices that influence their future.
Teachers felt it was important to have students finish watching video.
I chose to use one inmate's interview per lesson. Using the video this way, I can create many different lessons.
My overall objective was violence prevention.

The younger kids that watched the dvd actually seemed to get more out of it. The high school age groups tend to think that it was scripted or that the persons in the dvd weren't sincere. There were very few negative reactions to the stories though. Most who watched it in later discussions tended to show that that was definitely not a life
path that they wanted to end up on.

Thanks for your work

I've answered this one so others will know.  Shirley Dicks

The guys came out because they wanted to help the kids out there, and I didn't know what they would say until it was said.  I taped it on my camera as the warden had given me permission to do so.  None of it was scripted and each guy talked from the heart.  I asked them if they'd talk to the kids because I'd written the book and I thought that the tape would work so much better as the kids could see and hear what it was like and that the guys are just ordinary guys who made the ultimate mistake in life by taking someone's life while committing a crime. They came out because I asked them to, and because they wanted to help.

My youngest son Trevor and I have spoken at many schools and colleges over the years and told our stories.  The kids really listened and said how much it helped them after viewing the dvd to hear our story, and to hear Trevor tell how he got involved in drugs and alcohol once his big brother was sent to death row for a crime he never committed.  If you'd like to read Trevor's story, check

We showed the DVD at the end of the school year (07).  I remember the students talking the most about the first man in the program. That was Gerald Laney who had been in the biker gang.   I thought it was a valuable DVD with a powerful message.      Thanks,  Jason Haas-Sunshine Acres Children's Home

We have been showing the kids in the 4th and fifth grades the dvd and they've read the chapters in the book.  It's powerful and hits home.  The kids talk it over after the showing and say they never want to go to a place like prison and so I think it's worth showing.  We'll keep on showing it every so often and every year to the new kids.
